What is the best pizza in the world 2022?
A few weeks ago we reported on the 50 best pizzerias in Asia-Pacific – a handy ranking from the team behind the annual 50 Top Pizza list based out of Italy. The comprehensive round-up, led by Melbourne’s 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar, was focused on analysing the best pizzas in Asia, Australia and New Zealand for the benefit of travellers in search of the finest slices in town.
- Now it’s time for the big one, with 50 Top Pizza announcing an expanded global list at a recent ceremony held in Naples to present an easy guide to the world’s best pizza.
- Mind you, this Word’s Best Pizza list once primed Melbourne’s 400 Gradi for global recognition by crowning it with the top spot a few years ago.
Johnny Di Francesco’s ubiquitous pizza chain has now fallen out of the Top 100, as you’ll see below, but it should show you the kind of industry power such a ranking holds. This year, the top spot returns to Italy, with Francesco Martucci’s I Masanielli in Caserta – which is in the Campania region of Italy, just outside of Naples – nabbing the top spot.
Following closely is New York’s Una Pizza Napoletana in second and Paris pizza restaurant Peppe Pizzeria in third. The rest of the list mostly darts between Italy and big US cities like New York and San Francisco, while Tokyo – surprisingly nowhere in the top ten – gets only two nods this year and Australia shows up at #13 with the aforementioned 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar.
RELATED: The Best Pizza Ovens In Australia For A Backyard Slice The actual Top 50 Pizza website lists all 100 restaurants, extending the scope a bit more. Sydney’s A Taglio manages to scrape in at #94. The biggest takeaway from the list, which we’ve included in full below, is that Naples, and specifically Caserta, remains the number one place to be if you’re looking for the world’s best pizza.
Italy’s third-largest city dominates the top ten with no less than five spots (#1, #4, #5, #7 and #9). Of course, if you want the best – according to both this list and many pizzaiolos around the world – you’re heading to I Masanielli di Francesco Martucci. The restaurant itself is a 25-minute drive outside of Naples and about a 1.5-hour drive from Amalfi so it’s quite easy to reach for Aussies who regularly vacation in that area of Italy.
Of the current world’s best pizza restaurant, the 50 Top Pizza website reads: “The menu tells of a research on state-of-the-art doughs, precise cooking, and interesting combinations of high-quality raw materials that speak of the experimentation of a classy cuisine at the service of a pizza that remains the absolute protagonist of the table.” “All the growth of the proposal can be appreciated in the tasting menu, a Pindaric fight suspended between the elegance of flavours and the concreteness of the territory that Francesco Martucci combines with masterful balance.”

What is the number 1 food in Italy?
1. Pizza – Though a slab of flat bread served with oil and spices was around long before the unification Italy, there’s perhaps no dish that is as common or as representative of the country as the humble pizza, Easy, cheap, and filling, pizza has long been a common snack or meal, especially in Naples where tomato sauce was first added.
When the Italian Queen Margherita came through the bustling city on a tour of her kingdom in 1889 she asked to try this dish that she saw so many of her subjects eating. A local entrepreneur served her the now legendary combination of tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil, creating (or more likely, branding) the Margherita pizza.
Whether by coincidence or design, the Margherita also displays the colors of the Italian flag. Today, there are essentially two types of pizza to choose from in Italy: Neopolitan-style pizza, or Roman-style pizza (though to be honest, many delivery places exist that is a happy medium between the two).
- Neapolitan-style pizza has a thick, fluffy crust.
- It tends to be a little smaller in diameter because the dough hasn’t been rolled out as far and it’s more filling.
- Roman-style pizza is has a paper-thin crust and just the slightest crunch (you don’t want it to be soggy!) It’s larger in diameter but typically lighter and less of a gluten bomb.
Because of Naples’ history with Queen Margherita, the city claims to be the birthplace of modern pizza, although the point is debated throughout Italy. Whatever the case may be, the general rule for ordering pizza in Italy is to shoot for fewer toppings.
You should also be skeptical of any pizzerias that load the toppings onto their pies – this can often be a tactic used to cover up the use of poor ingredients. Fewer toppings are a sign of confidence in the product because each topping has to be exemplary. Whichever pizza you might favor, the other rule of thumb is: When in Rome, do as the Romans do, i.e., eat Roman style pizza.
