Zip and unzip files Windows 10 Windows 8.1 Zipped (compressed) files take up less storage space and can be transferred to other computers more quickly than uncompressed files. In Windows, you work with zipped files and folders in the same way that you work with uncompressed files and folders. Combine several files into a single zipped folder to more easily share a group of files.
- Locate the file or folder that you want to zip.
- Press and hold (or right-click) the file or folder, select (or point to) Send to, and then select Compressed (zipped) folder, A new zipped folder with the same name is created in the same location. To rename it, press and hold (or right-click) the folder, select Rename, and then type the new name.
- Locate the zipped folder that you want to unzip (extract) files or folders from.
- Do one of the following:
- To unzip a single file or folder, open the zipped folder, then drag the file or folder from the zipped folder to a new location.
- To unzip all the contents of the zipped folder, press and hold (or right-click) the folder, select Extract All, and then follow the instructions.
Notes:
- To add files or folders to a zipped folder you created earlier, drag them to the zipped folder.
- If you add encrypted files to a zipped folder, they’ll be unencrypted when they’re unzipped, which might result in unintentional disclosure of personal or sensitive information. For that reason, we recommend that you avoid zipping encrypted files.
- Some types of files, like JPEG images, are already highly compressed. If you zip several JPEG pictures into a folder, the total size of the folder will be about the same as the original collection of pictures.

What do I do if a ZIP file is too big?
Alternative options for sharing files that don’t compress – Sometimes you can try both zipping and NXPowerLite compression and still have a file that is too big. In this situation you are left with the following options for sharing your zip file:
For Video and Audio files you’ll likely have to re-encode the file to reduce it in size which is in most cases a pretty involved process. The free tool Handbrake is our go-to tool for easy reencoding options. There are also online services that can do this for you, although most have file size or other limitations. Use an online file sharing service and send a link to download the file to your recipient. Split the file into multiple parts to share and the recipient can reconstitute the parts into a single file. A good example of this is the RAR format, of which there are a number of great (free) solutions such as 7-Zip, Try other zip compression algorithms such as ‘Zipx’ or ‘.7z’ both of which are available in the 7-zip application.
How do I make a ZIP file less than 25 MB?
Tech Ease One way to store more data when you are low on hard drive space is by using compression to make the files and folders you already have on the drive take up less space. In the past, utilities such as Winzip were used for this purpose, but Windows XP has a built in compression utility that does the same job. Type a name for the compressed folder and press enter. Your new compressed folder will have a zipper on its icon to indicate that any files contained in it are compressed. To compress files (or make them smaller) simply drag them into this folder. To uncompress them (or return them to their original state) drag them out of the compressed folder. Compressed folders even support a password option, allowing you to use them as a place to store sensitive information. In addition to the compressed folders feature, Windows XP supports another type of compression if your hard drive is formatted as an NTFS volume. You can see it if your hard drive was formatted with NTFS by opening My Computer and then taking a look at the details section on the lower left. NTFS compression differs from compressed folders in that the NTFS compressed folders appear like any other folders. The operating system compresses and decompresses them on the fly each time you access and close them. NTFS compressed folders do not have a zipper on their icon.
Toward the bottom of the window you will see a check box that will allow you to Compress contents to save disk space.
If you want to display your NTFS compressed folders using a different color, select Tools, Folder Options from an Explorer window. Then in the View tab, make sure Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color is checked.

Why does zip not reduce size?
Some types of files compress better than others. Certain data files, such as text files, picture files in the BMP format, and some text style database files can often be compressed by 90% or more. There are some other types of files, such as program files, that may compress by 50% or so.
Learn how to make a zip file, There also are other types of files that often will not compress well. For example, most multimedia files will not compress much, as they already exist in a highly compressed state. These file types usually employ efficient techniques to compress the data they contain. Examples include, but are not limited to, graphic (picture) files (GIF, JPG, PNG, etc), music files (MP3, WMA, etc), and movie files (AVI, MPG, etc).
Files that are compressed, as these examples are, usually cannot be compressed more to any significant extent. Therefore, such files don’t get much, if any, smaller when they are added to a Zip file (.zip or,zipx). You would see a similar lack of compression if you zipped some files using maximum compression and then added that Zip file to another Zip file.
- This second Zip file would not be substantially smaller than the first one (it may even be slightly larger).
- Again, this is because the data in the original Zip file is already compressed.
- Some document files, including those created by Microsoft Office, are actually Zip files with a custom file extension.
There are other file types that don’t compress well. For example, certain types of encrypted data files, such as those used by home finance programs and some spreadsheet products, will not compress very much. If you are using WinZip 21 or later with MP3 files, you can use Best method and compress your MP3 files up to 20% more without loss of fidelity.
- If you are using WinZip 12 or later with JPG files, you can use Best method and compress your JPG files up to 20% more without loss of quality.
- With this setting, WinZip will use MP3 compression and/or Jpeg compression with files of those types and the result will be a Zipx file.
- If you are planning to share these Zip files with others, you should be sure that they are also using WinZip 21 or later to unzip MP3 files and WinZip 12 or later to unzip JPG files.
Again, if you create Zip files and see files that cannot be significantly compressed, it is probably because they already contain compressed data or they are encrypted. If you would like to share a file or some files that do not compress well, you might:
Email photos by zipping and resizing them Use WinZip Express for Explorer to zip your files, upload them to a cloud service, and send a download link by email Email a link to files you’ve already uploaded to a cloud service

Will zipping a ZIP file make it smaller?
General Information The main purpose of compressing (more commonly referred to as zipping) files is to make them smaller so that they take up less space on your computer. Zipping a file does not change the content or structure of a file, it only changes how much space a file takes up on the computer. We recommend that you zip a file when:
you need to make space on your computer – in this case, start by zipping files that are large and which you don’t use/access very often when you need to send a group of files by email
Almost all zipped files have the extension, zip, although in rare cases you might also see,rar depending on the application that was used to create the file. Zipping a file There are several different programs (some free and some commercial) that you can use to zip a file.
- Most of these programs have the same basic functionalities, and all will also provide a way to unzip a file.
- You can zip a single file, a group of files, or a whole folder.
- When you zip a folder, all of the files and sub-folders inside it are automatically included for zipping.
- Most often, when you zip a folder and then unzip it later, the newly unzipped folder will keep the file structure of the original folder.
But, this is not always the case. If it is important to keep the same file structure when you unzip the file, you should always check that the zipped file has kept the structure by unzipping it yourself first (unzipping a file does not delete/remove the zipped version, so you won’t have to zip it again).
- If the original file structure is not kept, you will need to change some of the settings of the zip application in order to make it keep the original file structure.
- Once you have zipped a file, you will see that the,zip file is created in addition to your original file, in the same folder as the original.
In fact, a copy is made of your original file, and it is that copy that is zipped. These two files (the, zip file and the original file) are independent of one another. This means that you can modify, move or delete one and it will have no effect on the other.
- Note: if you change an original file (for example you add something too it) it becomes different from the version that you zipped.
- This means that when you unzip the file, it will not be the same as the modified original.
- Unzipping When you unzip a file, you expand it back to its original size.
- Some compression programs such as WinZip and PowerArchiver allow you to preview the content of a,zip file, and the files that are in it.
This means that if your, zip file contains a,doc file, you can open that, doc file to see what is in it. However, you won’t be able to save any changes that you make to that, doc file. In order to work with a file/folder that has been zipped (edit it, save changes etc), you MUST unzip it first, then open the unzipped file/folder and work with it.
Note: different applications use different names for the process of unzipping – unzip, expand, extract etc. Not all files reduce the same amount The amount by which a file will reduce depends on the content of the file. Simple text files reduce quite a lot, while text files with formatting reduce less, and image files reduce very little.
The example below shows a folder that contains 4 files. Two original files – one image and one text – that have the exact same size (93KB), and their zipped counterparts. As you can see, the image file has only been reduced to 88% of its original size after it was zipped, while the text file was reduced to 23% of its original size. Exercise: try to zip any file or folder using the compression software provided on the ETI computers (PowerArchiver). On a computer in the ETI computer lab, select any file or folder (or create one as a test file) and then right-click on it and select the option Compress to ‘Filename.zip’ from the contextual menu.

What is the fastest way to compress large files?
Compressing Files – If the file you’re trying to send is just above the limit (for example, a 30 Mb file on Gmail), you may be able to compress the file to just under the limit. Right-click the file, select Send to, and then select Compressed (zipped) folder, Most files, once compressed into a ZIP file, will reduce in size from anything like 10 to 75%, depending how much available space there is within the file data for the compression algorithm to do its magic. Read our other post that goes into detail on which compression program is best,
If the compression routine was able to shrink the file below the size limits of your email service, you can attach the file to your email.
