Why is Word not letting me create a new document?
Home » Blog » Can’t open new Microsoft Word document – Microsoft Word normal.dot / normal.dotm fix If you cannot open a blank Microsoft Word document, chances are your template file in Word is corrupted. The template file in word, a.k.a. Normal.dot, a.k.a. global template file, controls all of the formatting, AutoText, and overall template within Word.
It affects how Word opens, closes, and saves as well. If you cannot open a new Microsoft Word document, your global template file within Word may be corrupted. There is a simple fix for this. However, before implementing the fix, check other programs to see if they open or not. If they also do not open, you probably have a virus infection and need to have a virus specialist remove it.
Here’s how to fix your inability to open a new Word document:
Close all Microsoft Office programs. Go to C:Users AppDataLocalMicrosoftTemplates For Word 2000 / 2002 / 2003, change Normal.dot to OldNormal.dot. For Word 2007 / 2010, change Normal.dotm to OldNormal.dotm. Start Word
After renaming the Normal.dot or Normal.dotm, Word will recreate a new template file which should allow you to get back into opening new Word documents again. If this doesn’t work, you should contact a Microsoft Word specialist,

What is a TEMP environment variable?
The TEMP/TMP environment variables specify the location in which most programs place temporary files. By default, TEMP/TMP location is in the Windows partition. To speed up the access, you may set the TEMP/TMP variables to a ram disk. Thus temporary files will be placed in the ram disk instead of the hard disk, avoiding the access the hard disk.
- This is also good for the life of a Solid-State Drive (SSD) by reducing wear.
- To change the value of TEMP/TMP environment variables, you may follow the instructions from Microsoft.
- Another easier way is to use Primo Ramdisk mini tools.
- See Environment Variables Tool,
- If you want to set TEMP/TMP variables to the ram disk, you shall tick the checkbox Create “TEMP” folder automatically (see File System Features ) when you create the ram disk.
This makes a ram disk automatically create an empty folder named “TEMP” every time computer restarts. Otherwise most programs cannot find the TEMP path. Then you can set the variable values to X:\TEMP, here X is the drive letter of the ram disk. Limits: a.
- Sometimes the ram disk may not have enough space to hold the temporary files, which cause some applications failed to continue working.
- This is because usually the size of a ram disk much smaller than a hard disk.
- Now one of the solutions for this issue is to create a large hybrid-disk.
- See Ramdisk, Hybrid-disk and File-disk,b.
Because a ram disk does not preserve its data across computer restarts if the Image File Feature is not enabled, the temporary files are automatically cleared after you restart the computer. Usually this is not a problem. But when you install new programs or do updates which require restart, sometimes error happens because setup/update program cannot find previous stored files in TEMP/TMP path after restart.

How do I fix environment variables in Windows 10?
How to Edit Environment Variables – There are some minor differences between the user interfaces of Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the basic process of editing environment variables is the same. To configure your environment variables, click the Start button, then type “environment properties” into the search bar and hit Enter. In the System Properties window, click “Environment Variables.” Click on the variable you’d like to change, click “Edit.”
Many environment variables will simply take a name and value, like “Number of processors.” All you have to do to edit them is to change the value, and click “OK.” Adding an environment variable works the exact same way, except you must specify the variable name and value. The variable value can take multiple values if you want, but the values must be separated by semicolons. Once you’ve named your variable and assigned a value, click “OK.” Some environment variables, like Path, look a little different, though they function in exactly the same way. The Path variable is given as a list from which you can add, edit, or delete entries.
You can add another folder to the Path by clicking “New,” and then specifying the folder.
RELATED: How to Move Windows’ Temporary Folders to Another Drive If you write a lot of batch or PowerShell scripts, or frequently use non-Windows command-line applications, it is probably worth the effort to customize your environment variables — you’ll save a ton of time in the long run.

Why is word not letting me access my documents?
Word Cannot Open the Document: User does not have access privileges Hi Matthew, I’m Jung one of the Independent Advisor and I’d be happy to help you out with your question. Microsoft Word is a word processor developed by Microsoft which was initially released in 1983.
It is one of the most used word processors in the world with its users continuously growing each day. Microsoft constantly updates Word every once in a while with major improvements and improved accessibility. Many users face a problem where they cannot access a word file. The error states that they don’t have enough privileges to view the content.
This error can pop up on a number of occasions; when you transfer files from another computer, when you update your Word client, or when you encrypt files.Solution 1: Changing File PermissionsIn most cases, the file doesn’t have ownership for your account to view or read it.
We can try adding the owner to your account by accessing the file security settings and changing the permissions.Right-click on the word document and select Properties.Once in the Properties window, navigate to the Security tab. If you see a line stating “You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object”, it means that your account doesn’t have sufficient authorization to view this file.
Click on Advanced present at the bottom of the screen. If you another window with the button “Continue” with an administrator logo right beside it, click it so you can access the new window. Once in the permissions tab, click on “Add”.Once in the Permission Entry window, click on “select a principal” present on top of the window. You might not know the exact name of the user you are trying to add so click on “Advanced” at the bottom left of the screen so we can add the user from the list. Now we can start searching for our user/group and select it to grant the permission accordingly.
- Click “Find New” and the list of all users will populate in the space (at the bottom).Search the list for “Authenticated Users” and after selecting it, press Ok.Now the user/group will be populated automatically in the object namespace.
- Press Ok to proceed.Make sure that all the checkboxes are checked (all the permissions are granted [Full control, modify, read and execute, read and write etc.)Press Ok and Apply in the permission windows to apply the changes and exit.
Now try opening the file by double-clicking it. Hopefully, it will open without any problems.Solution 2: Changing Deny PermissionsIt is also possible that the file you are trying to access has its control denied to all users in its security properties.
This usually happens when you transfer files in bulk from one computer to another.PRO TIP: If the issue is with your computer or a laptop/notebook you should try using Restoro Repair which can scan the repositories and replace corrupt and missing files. This works in most cases, where the issue is originated due to a system corruption.
You can download Restoro by Clicking HereRight-click on the word document and select Properties.Once in the Properties window, navigate to the Security tab.If you have a tick present in front of every user, it means that access is not granted to all the groups.Click on the “Edit” button to change the permissions.Once in the permissions tab, click on the “Allow” button present on Full Control.
- Now all the Deny will be automatically removed.
- Press Apply to save changes and exit.Try running the word document again.
- It is possible that you require a restart.Solution 3: Removing Properties and Personal InformationWord tends to automatically save personal information in the file information section such as authors name, date modified etc.
There were many cases where the users reported that removing this information solved the problem for them and they were able to successfully open the file.Right-click on the word document and select Properties.Navigate to the details tab and click the option which states “Remove Properties and Personal Information”.Check the option which says “Create a copy with all possible properties removed” and press Ok.This will automatically create a copy in the current directory of the computer with all the attributes removed.
You can also select all the files at once and perform this operating by opening properties and selecting Details tab.Solution 4: Checking Anti-Virus ExceptionsMany Anti-Virus have a feature where they automatically protect folders (such as my documents) and cause access problems like the one we are facing.
You should head over to your anti-virus settings and check the protected list if the file you are accessing is in a folder which protected. All anti-virus are different so we cannot list all the methods right here. For example Panda Cloud Antivirus has a data protection where folders tend to be added to the “Protected” list automatically.
Make sure that the folder isn’t protected, restart your computer and try accessing the document again.Solution 5: Copying all the Documents to Another DriveYou can also try copying all the existing documents to another hard drive altogether and check if the problem still persists. In many cases the document couldn’t be opened when it was on a hard drive/SSD but it opened perfectly when it was copied to another drive or the computer.Open the external/hard drive and manually select all the files to be copied to another location.
Right-click and select Copy. Now navigate to your computer and in an accessible location, create a new folder and paste all the contents.Solution 6: Changing “Inherit from parent entries” OptionInherit from parent entries is an option available on Microsoft which is ready enabled from the very start.
- It helps in ease of access and makes a lot of things simpler if you are working regularly with Word.
- However, this might prove to be a problem like cause the problem we were facing.
- We can try disabling it and check if this brings any change.Right-click on the word document and select Properties.Select the Security tab and click on “Advanced” present at the near bottom of the screen. At the near bottom of the screen which states “Disable inheritance”.
Click it.Press Apply to save changes and exit. Now try accessing the file again. You may check this link for more details: Note: This is a non-Microsoft website. How do I enable an env file in Windows?
Issue with virtualenv – cannot activate I created a virtualenv around my project, but when I try to activate it I cannot. It might just be syntax or folder location, but I am stumped right now. You can see below, I create the virtualenv and call it venv. Everything looks good, then I try to activate it by running source venv/bin/activate I’m thinking it might just have to do with my system path, but not sure what to point it to (I do know how to edit the path). I’m on python 7 / windows os, virtual env 2.2.x Processing dependencies for virtualenv Finished processing dependencies for virtualenv c:\testdjangoproj\mysite>virtualenv -no-site-packages venv The -no-site-packages flag is deprecated; it is now the default behavior. Using real prefix ‘C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Python’ New python executable in venv\Scripts\python.exe File venv\Lib\distutils\distutils.cfg exists with different content; not overwri ting Installing setuptools.done. Installing pip.done. c:\testdjangoproj\mysite>source venv/bin/activate ‘source’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. c:\testdjangoproj\mysite>source venv/bin/activate ‘source’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. c:\testdjangoproj\mysite>source mysite/bin/activate ‘source’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. c:\testdjangoproj\mysite> 2 source is a shell command designed for users running on Linux (or any Posix, but whatever, not Windows). On Windows, virtualenv creates a,bat/.ps1 file, so you should run venv\Scripts\activate instead (per the virtualenv ). Just run activate, without an extension, so the right file will get used regardless of whether you’re using cmd.exe or PowerShell.11 I had the same problem. I was using Python 2, Windows 10 and Git Bash. Turns out in Git Bash you need to use: source venv/Scripts/activate 1 I was also facing the same issue in my Windows 10 machine. What steps i tried were: Go to andconda terminal Step 1 pip3 install -U pip virtualenv Step 2 virtualenv -system-site-packages -p python,/venv or virtualenv -system-site-packages -p python3,/venv Step 3,\venv\activate You can check it via spider tool in anaconda by typing import tensorflow as tf 1
- For activation you can go to the venv your virtualenv directory by cd venv,
- Then on Windows, type dir (on unix, type ls ). You will get 5 folders include, Lib, Scripts, tcl and 60
- Now type,\Scripts\activate to activate your virtualenv venv,
Your prompt will change to indicate that you are now operating within the virtual environment. It will look something like this (venv)user@host:~/venv$, And your venv is activated now.2 Ensure venv is there and just follow the commands below. It works in Windows 10. Go to the path where you want your virtual enviroments to reside: > cd Create the virtual environment named “env”: > python -m venv env Add the path to the git ignore file (optional): > echo env/ >>,gitignore Activate the virtual env: >,\env\Scripts\activate 1 source command is officially for Unix operating systems family and you can’t use it on windows basically. instead, you can use venv\Scripts\activate command to activate your virtual environment.0 For windows, type “C:\Users\Sid\venv\FirstProject\Scripts\activate” in the terminal without quotes. Simply give the location of your Scripts folder in your project. So, the command will be location_of_the_Scripts_Folder\activate. if you already cd your project type only in windows 10 Scripts/activate That works for me:) Tried several different commands until I came across: source venv/Scripts/activate This did it for me. Setup: Win 10, python 3.7, gitbash. Gitbash might be the culprit for not playing nice with other activate commands.1 A small reminder, but I had my slashes the wrong way on Win10 cmd. According to python the activate command is: C:\> \Scripts\activate.bat When you’re browsing directories it’s e.g. cd,env/Scripts So to create my venv I used python -m venv -copies,env and to activate,env\Scripts\activate.bat 0
- Open your powershell as admin
- Enter “Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Force
- Run “gpedit.msc” and go to >Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Powershell
- Look for “Activate scripts execution” and set it on “Activated”
- Set execution directive to “Allow All”
- Apply
- Refresh your env
I have a hell of a time using virtualenv on windows with git bash, I usually end up specifying the python binary explicitly. If my environment is in say,env I’ll call python via,/.env/Scripts/python.exe, or in a shebang line #!./.env/Scripts/python.exe ; Both assuming your working directory contains your virtualenv (,env ).1 You can run the source command on cygwin terminal
- open the folder with any gitbash console. for example using visualCode and Gitbash console program: 1)Install Gitbash for windows
- 2) using VisualCode IDE, right click over the project open in terminal console option
- 3) on window console in Visualcode, looking for a Select-> default shell and change it for Gitbash
- 4)now your project is open with bash console and right path, put source,/Scripts/activate
- btw :, with blank space = source
For windows Microsoft Tech Support it might be a problem with Execution Policy Settings. To fix it, you should try executing Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Scope Process Finally Worked on Windows 10 by using: activate myvenv where myvenv is the name the virtual environment I want to activate. So basically, the command is: activate > All the best! 1
- if,\venv\Scripts\activate does not work neither and you find this error
- \Activate.ps1 cannot be loaded because running scripts is disabled on this system
- you can simple type set-executionpolicy remotesigned in powershell and the error must be gone.
powershell should run as administrator If you see the 5 folders ( Include, Lib, Scripts, tcl, pip-selfcheck ) after using the virtualenv yourenvname command, change directory to Scripts folder in the cmd itself and simply use ” activate ” command.0 If you’re using Windows, use the command “venv\Scripts\activate” (without the word source) to activate the virtual environment. If you’re using PowerShell, you might need to capitalize Activate. If wants to open virtual environment on Windows then just remember one thing on giving path use backwards slash not forward. This is right: D:\xampp\htdocs\htmldemo\python-virtual-environment>env\Scripts\activate This is wrong: D:\xampp\htdocs\htmldemo\python-virtual-environment>env/Scripts/activate The steps for activating virtualenv using Python3 on windows are:
- python3 -m venv env
- .\env\bin\activate
Use These it worked for me env\Scripts\activate For those of you crazy enough to have a custom DOS prompt, venv activation may fail, depending on your %PROMPT% environment variable content. Say you have a DOS prompt defined as follows: set PROMPT=$_$E $E 15/09/2022 20:31 F:\ > echo “Hello World” Hello World 15/09/2022 20:31 F:\ > ) Then if you try to activate a venv :,\venv\Scripts\activate.bat it may fail with a rather unclear error that states: Path not found without further indications. The trick is that activate.bat (/ deactivate.bat ) scripts try to save(/restore) the %PROMPT% variable with this syntax:, set _OLD_VIRTUAL_PROMPT=%PROMPT%, set PROMPT=(venv) %PROMPT%, It can be fixed with this syntax:, set “_OLD_VIRTUAL_PROMPT=%PROMPT%”, set “PROMPT=(venv) %PROMPT%”, now it shows: 15/09/2022 20:31 F:\ > venv\Scripts\activate.bat (venv) 15/09/2022 20:31 F:\ > Instead of using: source,/venv/Scripts/activate Use only:,/venv/Scripts/activate Your Script will be activated. If you are using windows OS then in Gitbash terminal use the following command $source venv/Scripts/activate. This will help you to enter the virtual environment.
- Open your project using VS code editor,
- Change the default shell in vs code terminal to git bash.
- now your project is open with bash console and right path, put “source venv\Scripts\activate” in Windows
Navigate to your virtualenv folder eg,\project1_env> Then type source scripts/activate eg,\project1_env>source scripts/activate The best way is, using backward slahes and using, bat at the end of activate C:\Users>your_env_name\Scripts\activate.bat :: location of bat file ::C:\Users\gaojia\Dropbox\Projects\free_return\venv\Scripts\activate.bat :: location of the cmd bat file and the ipython notebook ::C:\Users\gaojia\Dropbox\Projects\free_return\scripts\pre_analysis source,\.\venv\Scripts\activate PAUSE jupyter nbconvert -to html -execute consumer_response_DID.ipynb PAUSE Above is my bat file through which I try to execute an ipython notebook. But the cmd window gives me nothing and shut down instantly, any suggestion why would this happen? If you are using windows, just run,\Scripts\activate. Mind that the backslash plays the trick!, Earn 10 reputation (not counting the ) in order to answer this question. What is an example of an environment variable?
174 What is an environment variable? – The commands described below need to be entered while logged in to the Unix server. Normally you’ll see a prompt ending with $ when the command interpreter (or shell ) is ready for another command. An ‘environment variable’ (also known as an ‘export variable’) is a name or identifier, used in your login shell, which may be used to refer to something else that would be too verbose to type out in full each time it is used.
- It is also a convenient way of controlling the way some programs run.
- SCRATCH is an example of an environment variable.
- When used as part of a command they need to be preceded by a ‘ $ ‘, hence ‘ $SCRATCH ‘.
- They are called environment variables because they are used to modify the environment in which some programs run on the central system.
They are also called export variables because they are exported into program environments. Unexported shell variables remain available only to the shell in which they are created. For example, an ordinary shell variable can be created like this: FOO=”The fat cat sat on the mat” But an export variable is created like this: export FOO=”The fat cat sat on the mat” or by export ing a previously created ordinary shell variable: export FOO There are a number of standard environment variables which are used by a number of different programs.
One is EDITOR and may be used to store the full pathname of your preferred text editor. Programs such as alpine can use this. Another is HOME, which refers to your home directory. You can also invent environment variables of your own if you wished to. To get a list of all your environment/export variables and their values, give the command export by itself.
The list may be quite long! To find out the value of a given export variable – for example EDITOR – just type the command print $EDITOR (Note that you need to put a $ before the name in this context)

What is an environment variable in Windows?
Long description – Environment variables store data that’s used by the operating system and other programs. For example, the WINDIR environment variable contains the location of the Windows installation directory. Programs can query the value of this variable to determine where Windows operating system files are located.
PowerShell can access and manage environment variables in any of the supported operating system platforms. The PowerShell environment provider lets you get, add, change, clear, and delete environment variables in the current console. Note Unlike Windows, environment variable names on macOS and Linux are case-sensitive.
For example, $env:Path and $env:PATH are different environment variables on non-Windows platforms. Environment variables, unlike other types of variables in PowerShell, are always stored as a string and can’t be empty. Also unlike other variables, they’re inherited by child processes, such as local background jobs and the sessions in which module members run.
- Machine (or System) scope
- User scope
- Process scope
The Process scope contains the environment variables available in the current process, or PowerShell session. This list of variables is inherited from the parent process and is constructed from the variables in the Machine and User scopes. When you change environment variables in PowerShell, the change affects only the current session.
This behavior resembles the behavior of the Set command in the Windows Command Shell and the Setenv command in UNIX-based environments. To change values in the Machine or User scopes, you must use the methods of the System.Environment class. To make changes to Machine-scoped variables, you must also have permission.
If you try to change a value without sufficient permission, the command fails and PowerShell displays an error. PowerShell provides several different methods for using and managing environment variables.
- The variable syntax
- The Environment provider and Item cmdlets
- The,NET System.Environment class

- Delete the owner file. The owner file is located in the same folder as the document that you tried to open. The owner file name uses the following convention: It begins with a tilde (~), followed by a dollar sign ($), followed by the remainder of the document file name. The file name extension is,doc. For example, the owner file for Document.doc is named ~$cument.doc.
- Start Word. If Word asks you whether you want to load the changes that were made to the Global or Normal template, click No.
- Open your document.
Word creates an owner file when you open a previously saved Word document. An owner file is temporary and holds the logon name of the person who opens the document.
