How can I increase PST file size to 100gb?

This article applies only to Outlook for Windows. By default, starting from the Outlook 2010 version desktop application is able to open, pst files and create, ost which size is not more than 50 GB. If you try to open the,pst file which is more than 50 GB in size, you will receive the following error: In order to increase the maximum size of the,pst and,ost files that your Outlook can open or create you will need to add or modify the following registry entries:

  • The MaxLargeFileSize registry entry (default value is 51,200 MB (50 GB))
  • The WarnLargeFileSize registry entry (default value is 48,640 MB (47.5 GB))

The MaxLargeFileSize determines the absolute maximum size that both the,pst and the,ost files can grow to. After this maximum size is reached, Outlook does not permit the size of the file to grow beyond this size. The WarnLargeFileSize determines the maximum data that both the,pst and the,ost files can have.

After this maximum data is reached, neither the,pst nor the,ost files are permitted to add any more data. However, the size of the physical file may still increase because of internal processes. Important: it is recommended that the values between the MaxLargeFileSize registry entry and the WarnLargeFileSize registry entry be at least 5 percent (%) so that internal processes are not hindered from continuing.

These settings apply to both, ost and,pst files. If you modify these registry values, this can affect, ost files that are used with Cached Exchange Mode, with AutoArchive, and with, pst. files. If Outlook is configured to download shared folders, the contents of shared folders are stored in the local Offline Outlook Data (.ost) file.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\PST (x.0 corresponds to the Outlook version: 16.0 = Outlook 2016, 15.0 = Outlook 2013, 14.0 = Outlook 2010)
  3. Click PST, and then right-click MaxLargeFileSize in the right pane.
  4. Click Modify, select Decimal and then type the limit (102400 for 100 GB) in the Value data
  5. Click OK,
  6. Right-click WarnLargeFileSize, and repeat steps 4 through 5 (if you set the value for MaxLargeSize to 100GB then set WarnLargeFileSize to 97280 – 95 GB).

Note: you may have to create the registry values if they do not exist. If the registry values do not exist, follow these steps to create them:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook (x.0 corresponds to the Outlook version: 16.0 = Outlook 2016, 15.0 = Outlook 2013, 14.0 = Outlook 2010)
  3. Right-click Outlook, point to New, and then click Key, Maximum Outlook Pst File Size
  4. Type PST, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click PST, point to New and then click DWORD Maximum Outlook Pst File Size
  6. Type MaxLargeFileSize, and then press ENTER
  7. In the Edit DWORD Value window, choose Decimal and type the limit in the Value data box, and then click OK,
  8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 to create another DWORD WarnLargeFileSize, and then close the registry.

Value for registry entries should be set in either bytes or megabytes and you will need to calculate it first. You can use any online converter to calculate the value, for example this one – enter the gygabyte value, click Convert – the value you will need is the one in binary.

  • Despite the fact that you will be able to open, pst files that are larger than 50GB after making specified registry changes, it can still significantly decrease the performance of your Outlook application.
  • We don’t recommend increasing it to more than 100GB due to the nature of our shared environment.

In old Outlook data file types, the entries MaxFileSize and WarnFileSize were in use. Values under MaxFileSize and WarnFileSize have been used for the old-type ANSI format (an earlier Microsoft Outlook format) data files. T he ANSI values are set in byte increments.

Please note that since Outlook 2003 version the datafiles are in new UNICODE formats as ANSI format supports 2 GB data file maximum. The MaxFileSize registry entry (default value is 2,075,149,312 bytes (1.933 GB)) The WarnFileSize registry entry (default value is 1,950,368,768 bytes (1.816 GB)) If the old-type ANSI data file is in use please consider importing this, pst in the new profile.

The old type data file has “Outlook Data File (97-2002)” in the format of the file. If the value of the MaxFileSize registry entry ever exceeds the ANSI 2 gigabyte (GB) limit on either the,pst or the,ost files, the value will be ignored to limit the size to 2 GB to prevent corruption.

More Information – Follow these steps to configure the size limit for both the,pst and the,ost files. Note The settings that are discussed in this article apply to both, ost and,pst files. If you modify these registry values, this can affect, ost files that are used with Cached Exchange Mode, with AutoArchive, and with, pst.

  1. Files. If Outlook is configured to download shared folders, the contents of shared folders are stored in the local Offline Outlook Data (.ost) file.
  2. If the shared folders contain many items or large attachments, the size of the,ost file may grow significantly.
  3. Additionally, Outlook 2013 introduced support for Site Mailboxes.

If an Outlook 2013 client is working in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2013/Microsoft SharePoint 2013 environment and is granted permission to a site mailbox, the site mailbox is automatically added to the Outlook 2013 profile. If Download Shared Folders is enabled, the site mailbox contents are synchronized to the local, ost file.

  1. This can result in the,ost file exceeding the set limit.
  2. For more information about the Download Shared Folders setting in Outlook, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 982697 By default, shared mail folders are downloaded in Cached mode in Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry.

  2. In the left pane, expand the following registry key: For Outlook 2016 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook For Outlook 2013 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook For Outlook 2010 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook For Outlook 2007 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook For Outlook 2003 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook

  8. Repeat steps 3 through 7 to create another DWORD WarnFileSize.
  9. Repeat steps 3 through 7 to create another DWORD MaxLargeFileSize.
  10. Repeat steps 3 through 7 to create another DWORD WarnLargeFileSize, and then close the registry. Note For mass deployment of these registry keys on end-user machines, the ORK tool can be used.

To automate the registry creation on end-user machines, use ORK for deployment scenarios. It is recommended that the values between the MaxFileSize registry entry and the WarnFileSize registry entry, and the values between the MaxLargeFileSize registry entry and the WarnLargeFileSize registry entry be at least 5 percent (%) so that internal processes are not hindered from continuing.

  1. If the value of the MaxFileSize registry entry ever exceeds the ANSI 2 gigabyte (GB) limit on either the,pst or the,ost files, the value will be ignored to limit the size to 2 GB to prevent corruption.
  2. The default value for the WarnFileSizeregistry registry entry is calculated to be 95% of the MaxFileSize registry entry for a UNICODE file, and it remains at 1,950,368,768 bytes for small ANSI files.

Note You can set the UNICODE limits beyond the values that are listed in the table. However, we do not recommend doing this because performance can decrease. If,ost files or,pst files reach the limit that is specified in the WarnFileSize or the WarnLargeFileSize registries, the compaction function is triggered to try to reduce the size of the file to a usable level.

  1. When the WarnFileSize or the WarnLargeFileSize limit is reached, e-mail messages cannot be sent (provided that sent e-mail messages are stored in the Sent Items folder), and items cannot be copied or moved within the file.
  2. If the file is an archive, pst file that is used for AutoArchive, the AutoArchive operation will fail.

However, e-mail messages can be deleted or archived from a,pst or from an,ost file that is currently being used as the default delivery location. The following are some of the errors that may occur when files reach the maximums specified in the registries:

  • When you try to move items to a,pst or an,ost file that has reach the limit, you receive the following error message: Can’t move the items. The file \,pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need, and then permanently delete them.
  • When e-mail messages are delivered to a,pst or an,ost file that are using Cached Exchange Mode, and the file has reached the limit, the Mailbox Cleanup wizard launches.

Maximum total message send/receive size is 150mb. This includes both the message content and attachments. Attaching a large file to an email message requires uploading that file to the email system. This can increase the time required to send the message. Email attachments count against overall email storage quota. While the UI email systems allow sending and receiving 150mb email messages (including attachments), other external email systems continue to have smaller limits. Some common receiving limits are:

Gmail – 50mb Outlook.com – 50mb Yahoo – 25mb Peer universities – varies

Whenever possible, it is advised to use a file collaboration tool for large files. The University of Iowa supports which allows for file sizes larger than 150mb.

How do I increase my Outlook storage?

Methods to Increase the Office 365 Mailbox Size – There are several methods to increase mailbox sizes for Office 365 users, but certain conditions must be met for each method. Otherwise, to free up mailbox storage, you need to archive old emails or delete messages. The methods that can help you avoid email storage issues in Office 365 are explained below:

  • Upgrade the subscription plan : This method is straightforward but requires additional costs. You can buy a more advanced Microsoft Office 365 subscription that provides higher Exchange Online limits for mailboxes.
  • Edit quotas : Administrators can set mailbox quotas and edit the warning limit, send limit and send/receive limit. However, these values cannot exceed the limit of the Office 365 subscription plan in use. By default, the warning quota is set to 98% of the maximum mailbox size, the send quota is set to 99%, and the send/receive quota is set to 100% of the Office 365 mailbox capacity. Office 365 administrators can edit Office 365 mailbox size limits for users centrally.
  • Enable archiving : Mailbox archive allows you to enable 50 GB or 100 GB of additional email storage space in the cloud so you can archive old emails without deleting them. The top subscription plans support up to 1.5 TB of archive storage for one user. In this case, when 100 GB of archive storage is used up, another 100 GB of Office 365 online archive storage is provisioned. This feature is called auto-expanding. A user cannot use the mailbox archive for purposes other than archiving their own emails. For example, it is not permitted to archive emails of other users. While the data of the primary mailbox is stored in the cloud and can also be stored in an email client, the data of the archive mailbox is stored only in the cloud.
  • Delete unnecessary data : Users can delete emails that they no longer need from a mailbox to free up storage space. You can also back up Microsoft Office 365 email data to a custom location, and then delete these emails from the Office 365 cloud storage.

Note: If you use an email client (for example, Microsoft Office Outlook) and delete email messages in the client, you need to check whether emails are also deleted on the cloud side in Outlook Online.

  • If you use POP3 to receive email and a mail client is configured to leave a copy of a message on a mail server, then deleting a message in the email client doesn’t delete the message on Microsoft 365 mail servers. You need to open the web interface of Outlook Online and delete messages from the cloud email storage.
  • If you use IMAP, then email is completely synchronized between the email client and email server. If you delete the inbox message from the mail client, this message is also deleted from the mail server.
  • If your email client is configured to leave a copy of sent items on a mail server when using SMTP ( using an email client for Exchange Online ), you need to check these emails in Outlook Online. Delete the emails from the Office 365 email cloud storage if necessary.
  • Increase the Office 365 mailbox size : Office 365 administrators can increase the Office 365 mailbox size in PowerShell if the subscription plan supports this operation. This method can be used if the old Office 365 mailbox size limit is still applied for the mailbox, and Microsoft increased the mailbox size limit for the used subscription plan (for example, the limit was increased in 2013 and 2016 for Office 365 E3 and E5 subscription plans). If you created a mailbox before 2016, you can use this method to increase Office 365 email storage limits from 25 GB to 50 GB and from 50 GB to 100 GB, depending on your plan.

Keep in mind that increasing the maximum mailbox size doesn’t affect other limitations such as email size, address book limits, number of mailbox folders, sending limits, etc.

How do I increase my Outlook mailbox to 100gb?

Archiving in Microsoft 365 – Archive mailboxes are attached to other mailboxes. Data stored in an archive mailbox is accessible and searchable by the user. For users to be able to access the shared mailbox’s In-Place Archive, they need to be assigned explicit FullAccess permissions to the shared mailbox.

All the archived data can also be found with eDiscovery. It’s important to know that mailbox items from the primary mailbox do not flow automatically to the archives. There are two ways to move such items to the archive mailbox – by either setting up an archiving policy or moving the items manually. An archiving policy is a type of retention policy.

Retention policies can be set according to your organization’s needs to control your data. Mailbox items are assigned specific retention tags, according to which the oldest items are automatically moved to archive mailboxes or deleted. As you probably know, litigation holds and retention policies allow your company to access data even after it has been purged from user or shared mailboxes.

How do I increase Outlook GB?

How to Increase Outlook Mailbox Size Outlook mailbox size, by default, maxes out at 1.933GB, after which you may be unable to send and receive email. This is a good amount of space, but if you send and receive a lot of large file attachments in the course of corresponding with customers and employees, you may reach this limit rather quickly and receive the mailbox full notification.

  1. Log in to the computer with an administrator account.
  2. Click the Windows “Start” button and type “regedit” (without quotation marks) in the Search field. Press “Enter.” Click “File” and select “Export” to create a backup of your registry. Choose a location and filename for your backup REG file and click “Save.”
  3. Double-click “Computer,” “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” and “Software.” Double-click “Policies,” “Microsoft” and “Office.” Double-click “14.0” and “Outlook.” If the “PST” key exists, skip to Step 14. Click “Edit,” in the menu bar, hover over “New” and click “Key.” Type “PST” and press “Enter.” Click “Edit,” hover over “New” and select “DWORD value.” Type “MaxFileSize” and press “Enter” twice.
  4. Use the example in Step 3 to create the following three DWORD values: “WarnFileSize,” “MaxLargeFileSize” and “WarnLargeFileSize.” Click the “PST” key, and right-click “MaxFileSize” on the right. Click “Modify.” The number you type here will reflect your new maximum mailbox size, and must be entered in bytes. As a starting point, 2,075,149,312 bytes is equal to the 1.933GB default limit in Outlook 2010. Type the new maximum size limit in the Value data box. You may wish to double the figure given in Step 15. Click “OK.”
  5. Right-click “WarnFileSize” and click “Modify.” This figure, also entered in bytes, determines the amount of data the mailbox may store. MaxFileSize refers to the mailbox size overall, including internal processes that may increase its size. Choose a figure roughly 90 percent of the value you chose for MaxFileSize. Click “OK.” Right-click “MaxLargeFileSize” and click “Modify.” Type “51,200” in the box and click “OK.” Right-click “WarnLargeFileSize” and click “Modify.” Type “48,640” in the field and click “OK.”
  6. If you don’t feel comfortable modifying the registry, an easier work-around is to create another PST file and move messages into it. Messages in PST files do not count toward your mailbox size quota. If your company uses Microsoft Exchange, Outlook mailbox sizes may be controlled centrally, in which case these steps will not work. Your IT department may need to adjust your mailbox size on the Exchange server. Be frugal in selecting a new mailbox size limit; the larger your mailbox is, the slower Outlook will perform.
