Tony Gemignani, owner of Tony’s of North Beach at Graton Resort & Casino, was recently honored by 50 Top Pizza. | A San Francisco pizza maker with a Sonoma County restaurant has been named among the top pizza chefs in the world. Tony Gemignani was named “Pizza Maker of the Year 2022” and his San Francisco restaurant, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, was rated 10 out of 50 “Best Pizzerias in the World” in the annual 50 Top Pizza ranking in Italy earlier this month.
Tony’s Pizza Napoletana shared the news via Instagram on Sept.8, writing “Yesterday was a very special day for our entire team here at Tony’s!” On its website, 50 Top Pizza says the pies at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana “melt in your mouth,” and praise the restaurant’s traditional pizzas as well as alternative options, such as pan pizza and a Roman-style pizza.
In addition to Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, Gemignani’s award-winning pizzas can be enjoyed at his Sonoma County restaurant, Tony’s of North Beach inside the Graton Resort & Casino in Rohnert Park. Opened in 2013, Tony’s of North Beach offers the same traditional Napoletana-style pizzas as those found at his San Francisco spot, as well as meatless California-style pizza, thin-and-crispy New York-style pizza and traditional Italian-style pies and pasta dinners.
- Gemignani, who was also awarded 50 Top Pizza’s “Source of Inspiration 2022,” is considered a rock star in the world of pizza, and his Napoletana pizza won the 2007 World Pizza Cup competition in Naples, Italy.
- He’s also been in the Guinness Book of World Records twice – first for tossing the largest pizza dough in two minutes of continuous spinning (36.5 inches), and for most consecutive rolls across the shoulders in 30 seconds (37 rolls).
In addition to the sit-down casual dining at Tony’s of North Beach, Gemignani owns Slice House in the casino’s marketplace, featuring rotating pies available by the slice. Tony’s of North Beach is open 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m.

“I feel very grateful and humbled,” said Mangieri of coming out on top. “There are many other great places out there working hard and trying to push the boundaries, so it’s a real honor. This inspires us to keep learning and growing every day to keep getting better.” According to Mangieri, there are many things that make his pizza unique.
- The main ones I’d highlight are that the dough is naturally leavened and never refrigerated, and because I’ve been making the dough for 25 years, I’m continuously pushing hydration levels and trying new flour mixes.
- I also am constantly trying to source better and better ingredients.
- Ultimately, we approach everything with a focus on freshness, balance, and restraint so that every ingredient and element of the pizza shines through.” Coming in at No.4 on this year’s list was Dan Richer ‘s Razza Pizza Artigianale in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Richer was a little more reflective on the awards. “Of course, it’s nice to be recognized, but the best part is that they actually got these amazing pizza makers to fly in from all over the country. And to be able to see all of these people in the same room is just amazing.
Being able to sit next to Daniele Uditi from LA and being surrounded by a bunch of pizzamakers that he knows and loves, and ones that I know and love. It’s just a great community and it’s nice to see everybody.” Richer, who recently published his own pizza-making bible, The Joy of Pizza, is incredibly meticulous when it comes to making his pizza as delicious as possible and it’s part of why he’s constantly rated so highly.
“Instead of following the guidelines of what came before me or what’s authentic, I kind of broke through that and just focused on making a fundamentally delicious pizza. So, I broke down what a delicious pizza means to me into almost 60 different characteristics.
Everything from the structure and the build and how dark it’s baked; the crust should be light and airy, but crispy at the same time,” said Richer. A number of special awards were also given in various categories by the 50 Top Pizza organisation, including the Pizza of the Year 2022 – Latteria Sorrentina Award, which was awarded to the ‘diavola’ pizza at Pizzana in Los Angeles.

This screenshot from Hudson & Packard’s Instagram page shows the pan pizza that snagged the Hudson Valley pizzeria second place at the 2022 International Pizza Expo. Poughkeepsie, N.Y. — Craving a world-class slice of pizza? If you live in Upstate New York, you’re in cheesy luck.
A pan pizza made by Hudson & Packard, of the Hudson Valley, just won second place at the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas. The award-winning pie was cooked up by chef Charlie Webb, owner of the Poughkeepsie pizzeria. The competition took place last week during the International Pizza Expo & Conference, the world’s largest pizza show.
Webb won with his mouthwatering Holè Molè pie: a pan pizza made with duck confit, Oaxaca cheese, mole negro, habanero salsa and avocado puree, Hudson & Packard announced on Instagram. “We can’t wait to come back with some fresh new ideas to share with you all!” the pizzeria wrote after snagging second place.
- Webb, a Michigan native, started trying to craft the perfect Detroit-style pizza in Syracuse in 2014, according to Hudson & Packard’s website.
- He eventually enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and fell in love with the Hudson Valley.
- Webb and his friend Joe created Hudson & Packard in 2019, according to the pizzeria’s website, and started selling pies once a week out of the Underwear Factory community kitchen in Poughkeepsie.
When the Covid-19 pandemic forced the kitchen to shut down, Webb found a permanent spot to sell his pizza. Hudson & Packard’s permanent location on Poughkeepsie’s Academy Street opened in October 2020. The shop’s Detroit-style pies range from customizable “assembly line” pizzas to creative pies like the Hudson Hornet, a pizza topped with pickled jalapenos, thick-cut pepperoni and hot honey.
